Cobalto-calcite, also known as cobaltian calcite, is a striking pink to deep magenta variety of calcite colored by traces of cobalt. It is primarily found in copper-cobalt mining regions, with significant deposits in Zambia, the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Morocco and Kazakhstan. Cobalto calcite typically forms in botryoidal, drusy, or crystalline habits within the oxidized zones of cobalt-rich ore deposits, often associated with malachite, heterogenite, and quartz.
Due to its vibrant color and aesthetic appeal, cobalto-calcite is highly valued by mineral collectors and lapidary artists, with high-quality specimens commanding premium prices.
